Desa Upcycle: Membangun Kreativitas Masyarakat di Desa Tumpakrejo Kabupaten Malang melalui Daur Ulang Limbah Tekstil menjadi Produk Bernilai Jual

The exponential growth in textile waste due to unsustainable consumption patterns and ineffective community-level waste management has created an environmental problem. The community service program is intended to equipt the knowledge, creativity and practice of residents in Desa Tumpakrejo, Malang Regency on textile waste by introducing upcycling which can be used as an alternative method for textile waste treatment seeking product with economic values. Methods The research used descriptive qualitative with 20 housewives observation and documentation. Over two days, activities included on educational sessions related textile waste, sewing techniques and economic opportunities available for upcycling before direct mentoring and training to make tote bags from textile waste materials in person with the support of technical staff as well as university students. The training was interactive with meaningful discussions and everyone made their own tote bag. The program developed participants' knowledge on textile waste and methods of sustainable management, high precision sewing skills, creative upcycling skills to repurpose waste products for a household income. These results suggest that community-based upcycling initiatives can achieve a synergy where they simultaneously provide environmental benefits, enhance local empowerment and promote responsible consumption contributing to the progress towards SDGs 12.
