Abstract

Awareness of organic waste management among residents of RT 05 Bumiayu, Malang City, remains significantly limited, particularly because the majority of the population works as street vendors who face challenges in properly handling the organic waste they generate. Field observations revealed that unmanaged organic waste remains scattered across the area, highlighting the urgent need for a training program to enhance community understanding and foster beneficial waste-processing practices. Conducted in collaboration with the residents of RT 05 RW 04, Bumiayu, Malang City, this community training program aimed to assist the local community in sustainable waste management. The primary materials utilized included repurposed gallon containers, organic waste, and soil, supplemented by an activator solution consisting of molasses, EM4 (Effective Microorganisms 4), and water to facilitate the decomposition process. The implementation methodology comprised planning and execution stages, which involved four sequential steps: (1) educational sessions on the hazards of organic waste, (2) an introduction to the procedures for processing organic waste into liquid fertilizer, (3) a practical demonstration of liquid organic fertilizer production, and (4) direct hands-on practice by the participants. The intervention yielded high participant enthusiasm, as evidenced by active engagement, interactive responses, and inquiries raised during the training sessions. Consequently, it can be concluded that practical training in converting organic waste into liquid fertilizer plays a vital role in mitigating organic waste management challenges in Bumiayu.
